13 inch MacBook Pro Non-Retina and Retina with Cracked Screens and 11 and 13 inch MacBook Air LCD Replacements

Image
This cracked screen above looks pretty bad, with the horizontal and vertical colored lines and "shatter" image covering most of the screen. This type of cracking is common when the computer is closed on a small object like headphones. But we say this Mac was lucky, because the glass panel on the front of the display is totally intact. You might notice that there is a plastic case on this laptop. Yep, screens can be damaged even if the laptop has a case! For these Non-Retina models, the glass and LCD screen are separate parts. This 13 inch MacBook Pro A1278 was able to be repaired in under 24 hours for under $200. The newer Retina version 13 inch MacBook Pro has a thinner bezel around the LCD panel in the display, and doesn't have the silver "MacBook Pro" branding at the bottom of the screen. Another easy way to tell the Retina models apart from the older unibody MacBook Pros is to look for the DVD slot on the side of the computer. The newer models do not h

Usually, damage to the MacBook's LCD panel is pretty obvious. There are a few common signs of cracked LCD panels. For examples, check out some of these recent repairs that we've worked on. This little 11 inch MacBook Air has a pretty messed up looking display. At first you might think there's something wrong with the video card, because only half of the screen is showing the background image. There is a black bar splitting the display exactly in half. There are multicolored vertical white and rainbow stripes covering the right side of the screen. If you look closer, you will see the jagged purple line in the bottom corner. It's likely this MacBook Air A1466 was damaged along the bottom right, under the bezel. It might have gotten pinched too hard there while it was being moved, or

Cracked LCD panel on 13 inch MacBook Air

Image
This MacBook Air 13 inch model has a crack in the LCD screen in the top corner. It caused blue and black splotches to appear in front of the image on the screen. 13 Inch MacBook Air Screen Repair

Image
The damage sustained by this MacBook air caused the display to only work on exactly half of the screen. This was likely caused by the ribbon cable that allows the I/O board on the display to connect to the LCD panel itself. The new LCD panels come with this new IO board including those ribbon cables, so a new LED panel fixed the display nicely. Ribbon Cable Failures on MacBook Airs In the picture above you can see that the display of this MacBook Air did receive a hit or trauma that caused the display to fail. There are two ribbon cables at the bottom of the display that connect to an IO board which in turn connects to the logic board of the Mac. The hit seems to have damaged the left side ribbon causing the video feed to not come through at all for that side of the display. Failure without damage While the picture above is clearly damage, we have seen cases where these ribbon cables fail without any obvious damage to the display. The failure seems to occur more frequently if the

This MacBook pro took a hit from the back towards the bottom left of the machine, below where the Apple logo is. The hit damaged the LCD, but the glass on the outside of the computer was perfectly fine. We replaced just the damaged LCD and the computer is working great again! LCD only replacement, Glass still OK This is another great example of a computer that just requires an LCD replacement rather than an entire display replacement. 13 inch MacBook Air with broken LCD panel

Image
This MacBook Air suffered damage that caused the entire display to appear dark except the very top left corner. Once the LCD panel was replaced the computer worked properly again. Almost completely dark display There is a big difference between almost completely black, and completely black. Almost completely black with a splash of color or some form of image points to the LCD panel being the issue. If the screen on your Mac is completely black after boot up, it could still be the screen, but more likely it is an issue with the logic board. In the picture above there is a little bit of image visible at the top left. This image visible on the MacBook Air screen points to LCD damage as being the cause of the problem. Causes of almost completely dark display There are a number of things that can cause the display to go almost completely black the picture above. The most common way by far is some sort of trauma to the LCD panel itself. This can be a hit from the front or back, a jolt f

15 Inch MacBook Pro with Matte LCD Screen Repair

Image
We got a MacBook Pro in the shop today with a slightly unusual screen. This is a 15 inch MacBook Pro model A1286 like many of our customers have, but with one major upgrade. Instead of a standard LCD panel, this Mac has a "HD" LCD panel with a matte finish that's easier to read and displays accurate colors. Before Apple came out with their newer Retina display technology, this was the top of the line. Some people still prefer these matte screens because they reduce glare. One feature of these Matte LCD MacBooks is that they lack a glass panel over the screen. Instead, they have a thin aluminum bezel around the edge of the screen. This one has been decorated with a cute little fish sticker! The benefit of this design is that there's no glass to break, but the downside is the LCD panel is a little more exposed. Like all laptops, the screens on these MacBook Pros are susceptible to damage from drops, bumps, impacts, and rough handling. We're not sure exactly what ha

13 Inch MacBook Air With Blue and Green Hue

Image
This MacBook Air took a small hit on the bottom left of the screen. That caused the display to no longer display the correct data but rather just display a blue and green hue. Replacing the LCD fully restored functionality. MacBook Air Display with no recognizable content Oftentimes when a display is damaged you will still be able to see and use part of the screen. But in some cases, the screen is damaged in a way where it becomes completely unusable. In cases like the one above, the issue is just the LCD panel and a replacement will get the computer running properly again. If you need to use your computer while the display is not working, there is a mothod to using a secondary display that works quite well. You will need a secondary display with VGA, DVI, or HDMI inputs. If you have a even slightly modern TV, it will likely have HDMI inputs
